On Thursday 5th of September, the Year 9 & 10 Boys Basketball team travelled to Mill Park Basketball Stadium to compete in the regional basketball tournament.
Drawn into Pool C with Mill Park SC, Whittlesea SC and Thomastown SC, the boys had early success with a 19 -16 win over Thomastown SC and then pushed the eventual champions, Whittlesea SC, to the very end. The boys were leading by 1 with a minute left, but could not hold on, going down 24 - 21.
The boys shook off their disappointment at a missed opportunity and set their sights on claiming second place in Pool C, as they matched up with Mill Park SC. This game saw the lead change numerous times and with three seconds left, Wallan went to the free throw line with the scores tied at 23 all. We were unsuccessful but managed to hold Mill Park scoreless to end with a draw and clinch second place, thanks to point percentage.
Scheduled to play Lalor SC in the play off for third and fourth, the team displayed an excellent sense of sportsmanship, when the starters offered to let the bench players start and play the majority of the minutes. Some of these players had played limited time during the pool games and the starters felt that they should be given a chance to play meaningful minutes in the last game of the day.
The bench players took this opportunity with both hands, with most of them playing their best game of the day and challenging Lalor for most of the game before going down 27 – 24.
I would like to congratulate all members of the team on a successful day both on and off the court and acknowledge and thank them for the effort that they put in attending the twice weekly training sessions.
