From the Principal - May 2015

Schools are such busy places, I am sure that I comment on this in just about every newsletter. So many things have happened in the last month that I could not possibly list them all.

Our students have been busy working in their classes to prepare themselves for their end of semester exams and assessment. Much preparation is also occurring for new electives at year 8 through to 10. We are also beginning the planning process for the 2016 school year already!

The Senior Students of the College who are completing a unit 3/4 study have the GAT (General Achievement Task) ahead on 10th June. It is very important that parents and our students recognise the importance of this three hour long exam. The GAT is an essential part of the VCE assessment procedures. All students enrolled in one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3 and 4 sequences must sit the GAT. Although GAT results do not count directly towards a student's VCE results, they play an important role in checking that school-based and external assessments have been accurately assessed, and in calculating Derived Examination Scores. The GAT is used in these ways because achievement on the GAT is a good predictor of achievement on other assessments. If students have done well on the GAT, then their achievements are likely to be high on their school-based and external assessments. Please encourage your senior student to approach this exam seriously and we ask that they ensure that they give it their best shot!

It is amazing how quickly time passes in schools, already this term we have welcomed our new Year 7 students and our new staff. Our student numbers have increased significantly over the holidays, something that we are all very excited about. Our year 7 students have been on camp, our staff have already completed one reporting cycle and are preparing for Parent Teacher Interviews, we are beginning the process of Priority Review (a department initiative, intended to improve the outcomes of our students) and we have welcomed "new" and "old" families at our 2015 Welcome BBQ and have also held our very successful Senior School Information Night.

Our December newsletter! How quickly the year goes.

It was with excitement that we planned and then put into action our first ever Family Fun Day on Saturday 29th November. What an amazing event. So many of our staff and students gave up their time before the event and on the day to make it a huge success, for this we thank you.

The day bought with it beautiful sunshine and no wind. The College grounds looked amazing and the atmosphere was fantastic. We welcomed so many members of our current school community and also others who had never experienced all that Wallan Secondary College has to offer.

The day produced wonderful results and some much needed fundraising for school equipment for various learning areas and to make some ground improvements – sun shades are high on our priority list.

I would like to mention a few people who made this day possible and thank them so very much for all of their hard work. Firstly to Annette Kirby a member of our College Council who took the project on and spent the last 4 months of her life getting it of the ground. Thank you Annette, without you this event would not have been possible. To College Council members Regina Neven, Lisa Villegas and Jo Ann Brooks for their work on the day of the event, thank you for your time. Finally a big thank you to our staff Julian Connors (Assistant Principal), Robyn Snedden (Wellbeing Manager), Carol McLean (Business Manager) and all of our staff who worked hard both before and after the event and on the day.

Term 4 started with the sad news of the death of one of our staff members – equity ESO Deirdre Mason. Deirdre worked in our equity program for a number of years and will be sadly missed. Many of our staff and students celebrated Deirdre's contribution to our College with a Celebration Ceremony. We were so proud of Ben and Nathan Netley and Daniel Canty who each told us about their favourite memories of their time with Deirdre. We thank Deirdre from the bottom of our hearts for her contribution to our College.

This is our very first Family Fun Day. This will be our major fund raising event for the year and will allow for the College Council to designate funds to improvements in our school environment and teaching resources.

Farewell Heather Sadler

In August 2006, WSC employed a woman who was to become an integral part of the College.

Heather Sadler has held numerous roles over the past 8 years including Library Technician, even when we had no library, various roles in the administration area and her enormous efforts as producer and director of our school productions. Heather has an intricate knowledge of many areas of the College and has been a wealth of information for staff and students during her time here.
