Parenting Forum Thursday 12.10.17

on Friday, 22 September 2017.

Parenthood is like a new trade we enter without all the tools we may need from day to day.
This forum will give all parents and young people an opportunity to fill their toolbox with some new tools even if they are not used every day.

Drummond St, provide support services for families where a young person may be taking risks and parents are unsure how to respond or have tried without change.
The great thing about this forum is that it provides information for parents who just want to gain some knowledge and skills to be prepared should they ever need to talk to their child about risk taking behaviours.

Please join the Wallan Secondary College Wellbeing Staff and other parents and students to add to your toolbox for parenting, which can be challenging for any of us at any time.

Places are limited for this evening so please contact the school and leave your details, a light support will be provided.

Year 12 Biology

on Friday, 22 September 2017.

Our Year 12 Biology students examined the story of the Tasmanian Devil, focusing on devil facial tumour disease (DFTD) and how our understanding of this devastating illness has evolved over time. They learnt first-hand how Zoos Victoria is currently working to save Tasmanian Devils through both in-situ and ex-situ breeding and research programs, and how the concepts they have learnt about in VCE Biology are being used in real life to save this endangered species. Students also considered the ethical dilemmas faced when trying to save an endangered species, and contemplated how understanding a new type of contagious disease in our increasingly globally connected world could have unforeseen importance in the future.

The DFTD within the Tasmanian Devil population could result in devil extinction. However, emerging research reveals that this disease is a strong selection pressure leading to changes in areas of the devil genome related to immune function and cancer risk. This research suggests that Tasmanian devils are evolving resistance to DFTD.

VCAL Year 12

on Wednesday, 20 September 2017.

The VCAL Year 12 Crew finished the year with a huge team building experience. We went Ice Skating at Docklands! The students were very cautious to start, but by the end of our session, we had several of the students skating the arena without holding on. Most impressive were Jarred Guthrie and Rachel O'Dell, who not only skated upright the entire session, but also helped the others brave the ice by taking them by the hand and encouraging them. The entire Crew were full of smiles and nothing but positivity. Thank you so much to Jackie for coming along and putting the skates on to show the students anyone can do it. Thank you to each and every VCAL Year 12 student for making the day a huge success, you are an outstanding team of students and I am very proud of all of you.

'Romeo and Juliet: Rewind' and 'Shakespeare is Dead!'

on Friday, 22 September 2017.

Students from Wallan Secondary College were treated to a performance of 'Romeo and Juliet: Rewind' and 'Shakespeare is Dead!' from the Bell Shakespeare Players yesterday.

As part of the Regional Teacher Mentorship and Crown Partnership, students were able to watch two performances free of charge. The program allows access for students to view a professional performance they might not be able to see otherwise.

The response from the Year 7 cohort particularly was excellent and all of the students thoroughly enjoyed the performances from the three actors. The players have now finished their eight-month tour of Australia, making their performances in Wallan one of their last.

R U OK DAY?

on Thursday, 14 September 2017.

Today Teachers and Students participated in R U Ok Day? Our Teachers wore yellow to show their support for the day. Students played games and activities, which taught them ways to communicate with their peers and others.

Games included '2 Truths 1 Lie" where students were asked to tell two true things about themselves and one false and their fellow students had to work out which was the lie.

Another activity was 'The Worry Jar'. Students were asked to write down any concerns, worries or problems that they might be experiencing. The Teacher if required, provided advice or sort help from our Welfare Team, the note was than placed into the jar. In a couple of weeks, the Teacher and Student will open the jar and revisit the issue that was a concern for the Student. They will then discuss if the issue has cleared what actions they took to rectify the issue and what if anything did, they learn from the experience.

We are encouraging Students to keep using the skills they are learning and to check in with each other, family and friends. R U Ok?
